SITEWORK/EARTHWORK ESTIMATOR
POSITION OVERVIEW
Site Work / Earthwork Estimator is responsible for developing accurate and competitive cost estimates for a variety of civil and site development projects. This includes scopes related to grading, excavation, utilities, and general site preparation. A strong understanding of sitework construction methods, geotechnical considerations, and common site challenges is important for success in this role.
This position supports both alternative delivery and bid-build pursuits and may lead or support efforts depending on the complexity of the project. The Site Work / Earthwork Estimator will collaborate with a team of estimators, operations staff, engineers, and subcontractors to develop and deliver complete and competitive estimates. Proficiency with HCSS, Excel, and Bluebeam is required; experience with Agtek or similar GPS-based takeoff software is strongly preferred. Familiarity with Primavera P6 and AutoCAD is a plus.
The role requires strong time management, attention to detail, and the ability to manage multiple active estimates. Field walks and site investigations may be required to inform estimating strategies. All estimating functions are centralized at Southland Headquarters in Grapevine, TX.

RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Prepare complete estimates for sitework and earthwork scopes, often in collaboration with other estimators.
  • Interpret RFPs, drawings, and specifications to develop technically sound and cost-effective proposals.
  • Perform detailed takeoffs for grading, excavation, backfill, and site development work.
  • Coordinate closely with internal teams to align means and methods with execution strategies.
  • Solicit and evaluate subcontractor and supplier quotes.
  • Lead or support estimate reviews based on pursuit size and complexity.
  • Visit project sites to assess conditions, haul distances, material sources, and constructability factors.
  • Maintain current knowledge of earthwork construction methods, equipment, and cost trends.
  • Provide input on schedules, logistics, and potential value-engineering opportunities.
  • Contribute to continuous improvement of tools, templates, and processes.
  • Communicate clearly with estimating and operations leadership regarding risks and assumptions.
REQUIREMENTS
  • Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering, Construction Management, or a related field.
  • 5+ years of estimating or field experience in sitework or heavy civil construction.
  • Proficiency with HCSS, Excel, and Bluebeam is required; experience with Agtek or similar GPS-based software is strongly preferred.
  • Familiarity with Primavera P6 and AutoCAD is a plus.
  • Knowledge of excavation, dewatering, rock removal, and shoring methods is preferred.
  • Strong understanding of field operations and construction sequencing.
  • Excellent organizational and time management skills; must be able to manage multiple bids.
  • Willingness to travel up to 10%.
  • This is an onsite position based in Grapevine, TX. No remote or hybrid options.

  • Effective verbal and written communication with colleagues and stakeholders.
  • Must be able to understand and follow instructions, safety policies, and company procedures.
  • Overtime and weekend work may be required based on workload and deadlines.
